  • Description

TUMULTUOUS AND FANTASTIC SCENES IN GIBRALTAR THIS EVENING (SATURDAY). MOST OF IT 25,000 POPULATION TURNED OUT TO WELCOME HOME THE TWO DELEGATES WHO REPRESENTED THE BRITISH COLONY IN THE CURRENT DEBATE BY THE UNITED NATIONS COMMITTEE ON COLONIALISM.

THE COMMITTEE IS INQUIRING INTO A SPANISH DEMAND THAT BRITAIN AND SPAIN NEGOTIATE THEIR DISPUTE OVER THE TINY COLONY WHICH DOMINATES THE WESTERN APPROACHES TO THE MEDITERRANEAN.

AT THE SAME TIME, SPAIN HAS CALLED ON BRITAIN TO RESTORE GIBRALTAR'S SOVEREIGNTY BACK TO THE MADRID GOVERNMENT. GIBRALTAR WAS CEDED TO BRITAIN IN 1713 BY THE SPANISH.

BRITAIN TOLD THE COMMITTEE THAT IT WAS UP TO THE PEOPLE OF GIBRALTAR TO DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES BETWEEN BRITISH AND SPANISH RULE. SPAIN STRONGLY OPPOSED THE IDEA.

BRITAIN RECEIVED STRONG SUPPORT FROM GIBRALTAR'S CHIEF MINISTER, SIR JOSHUA HASSAN, WHO, WITH MR. PETER ISOLA, REPRESENTED THE COLONY BEFORE THE COMMITTEE. HE SAID: "IF WE HAD A PLEBISCITE, MY ONLY FEAR WOULD BE THAT WE MIGHT GET A 120 PER CENT MAJORITY FOR THE STATUS QUO."
THIS EVENING'S SCENES OF TUMULT BEGAN AT THE AIRPORT WHEN THE TWO DELEGATES ARRIVED FROM NEW YORK BY WAY OF LONDON. CROWDS LINED THE SHORT ROUTE INTO THE TOWN SQUARE, CHEERING AS THEY DROVE BY.

THE SQUARE WAS CRAMMED WITH MORE BANNER-WAVING CROWDS TO HEAR SIR JOSHUA AND MR. ISOLA SPEAK. SOME OF THE BANNERS CALLED FOR SELF-DETERMINATION, OTHERS SAID: "GOD SAVE KING," MR. KING BEING THE BRITISH DELEGATE IN THE DEBATE, WHICH RESUMES NEXT WEEK.
