  • Description

THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND PEOPLE TODAY (SUNDAY) FOLLOWED THE FUNERAL PROCESSION OF THE FORMER GREEK PRIME MINISTER, MR. GEORGE PAPANDREOU, AS IT LEFT ATHENS CATHEDRAL. THOUSANDS OF FRIENDS, ADMIRERS AND FOLLOWERS ATTENDED THE 80-YEAR-OLD POLITICIAN'S FUNERAL.

AMONG THOSE AT THE FUNERAL WERE MR. PAPANDREOU'S WIDOW KYVELI, HIS SON GEORGE, HIS DAUGHTER-IN-LAW MARGARET A. PAPANDREOU, AND SOME GRANDCHILDREN. THE GOVERNMENT WAS REPRESENTED BY THE FINANCE UNDERSECRETARY, MR. N. SIORIS.

MR. PAPANDREOU, WHO RULED GREECE AS PRIME MINISTER FROM 1963-65 AND EARNED THE REPUTATION AS ONE OF THE COUNTRY'S MOST BRILLIANT ORATORS, DIED ON FRIDAY (NOVEMBER 1) AFTER A SIX HOUR STOMACH OPERATION.

YESTERDAY (NOVEMBER 2) GREEKS FILED PAST THE FORMER LEADER'S OPEN COFFIN AS THEY PAID THEIR FINAL RESPECTS. MANY OF THOSE WHO VISITED THE BYZANTINE CHAPEL OF SAINT ELETHERIOS, NEXT TO ATHENS CATHEDRAL, BENT TO KISS THE BROW OF THE LATE MR. PAPANDREOU AS THEY WALKED PAST THE BIER. SOME WERE SOBBING.

MEMBERS OF HIS FAMILY REFUSED OFFERS OF A STATE FUNERAL. HIS SON ANDREAS, NOW IN EXILE, ISSUED A STATEMENT IN STOCKHOLM DECLARING THE OFFER OF A CEREMONIAL FUNERAL AS AN INSULT.
