  • Description

TROUBLE IN TOKYO, AS EIGHT THOUSAND SOCIALIST SUPPORTERS GATHER AT THE HABIYA OPEN-AIR MUSIC HALL TO PROTEST AGAINST TALKS BETWEEN JAPAN AND THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA. THE DEMONSTRATION, STAGED LAST MONDAY, (MARCH 30), MARKED THE LATEST PHASE IN THE NEGOTIATIONS WHICH HAVE BEEN GOING ON FOR THE PAST 12 YEARS.

THE SOCIALISTS SAY THAT JAPAN MUST INCLUDE NORTH KOREA IN ANY SETTLEMENT OF TERRITORIAL AND FISHING RIGHTS AND THE NORMALIZATION OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS. THEY CLAIM WITHOUT NORTH KOREAN PARTICIPATION, IT COULD APPEAR THAT JAPAN WAS AIDING THE SOUTH KOREANS.

THERE WERE NO REPORTED INJURIES FOLLOWING THE CLASHES WITH POLICE AND THERE WERE NO ARRESTS.

WHILE ANTI-JAPANESE-KOREAN TALKS CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN GATHERING MOMENTUM IN JAPAN, SIMILAR, ALTHOUGH UNCONNECTED, DEMONSTRATIONS HAVE OCCURRED IN SOUTH KOREA. THERE, STUDENTS HAVE BEEN AGITATING FOR THE END TO THE TALKS CLAIMING THAT THEY DEBASE KOREA, WHICH WAS RULED BY JAPAN FOR THE 37 YEARS PRECEDING 1945.

IN THE MEANTIME, PRESIDENT PARK OF SOUTH KOREA HAS RECALLED HIS ENVOY TO DISCUSS PROGRESS OF THE TALKS AND ALLOW TEMPERS TO COOL.
