    INTRODUCTION Spanish police freed two high-level political hostages on Friday (11 February) and arrested some of the urban guerrillas who kidnapped them. The two men, one a Lieutenant-General, the other a senior politician, had been kidnapped by an extremist group called GRAPO. They were freed in raids by special police units. The hostages, Senor Antonio Marie De Oriol Y Urquijo, and Lieutenant-General Emilion villaescusa Quilis, were both said to be in good health.

    SYNPOSIS: (MUTE) General villaescusa relaxed with members of his family the day after his release. He has been suffering from a heart condition and was taken to a military hospital for an examination after his ordeal. The 64-year-old General, who is President of the Supreme Council of Military Justice, was kidnapped on the 24th of January. He was found in a flat in a Madrid suburb. He said afterwards that he thought the men who rescued him had come to kill him, before he realised they were police.

    The home of Senor Oriol, President Spain's Advisory Council of state, who was abducted in mid-December. Senor Oriol's family, including grandchildren, gathered to celebrate his safe return. He was taken to central police headquarters and questioned about his kidnappers after the rescue. Senor Oriol, aged 63, is a member of the powerful Council of the Realm, and one of Spain's richest industrialists. He was Minister of Justice under the late spanish dictator, General Franco. His rescue from a hide-out in south-eastern Madrid, came two months to the day after his abduction at gunpoint from his Madrid office.

    Senor Oriol told interviewers that he was treated very Well by his kidnappers and felt more like a guest than a hostage. He said he had never felt in danger of his life, although GRAPO at one point threatened to execute him within 48 hours if its demands were not met.
