Former Untied States President Harry S. Truman was buried at Independence, Missouri on Thursday (28 December) after a service attended only by his close family and friends.
On Wednesday (27 December) President Nixon laid a wreath of red, white and blue carnations near the closed coffin in the foyer of the Truman Library in Independence. Former President Lyndon Johnson also paid homage to his old friend.
Later an estimated 10,000 people filed past the flag-draped coffin. Many mourners endured a three-hour wait in near freezing temperatures before viewing the coffin of the man who served them in the White House from 1945 to 1953.
