  • Description

President Ne Win of Burma has visited neighbouring Thailand for the first time in 13 years -- a visit which the leaders of both countries hoped would forge closer relations between the two neighbours.

SYNOPSIS: The two-day visit by President Ne Win to Thailand is reportedly to land-mark in relations between the two countries. The governments in Burma and Thailand had been cool to each other until recently mainly because of Burma's concern over what it regarded as Bangkok's sympathetic attitude toward Burmese rebels. Ne Win was greeted at the airport by Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and he was accorded full ceremonial honours.

The tension between the two countries has relaxed since a change in Thailand's leadership. After General Kriangsak Chamanand came to power in 1977, refuge for Burmese rebels on Thai soil has been denied. Burma has a 1,100 mile (1,760 kilometre) common border with Thailand and in the mountainous border region various rebel groups including Burmese Communist guerrillas have been active for thirty years. Thai authorities said they hoped this visit would further resolve the rebel problem along the border.

President Ne Win stayed at the Barom Piman Palace, where Thai government leaders called on him for talks during his visit. On the agenda was expected to be a discussion of the many forms of illicit trade across the border between the two countries. Drug trafficking has been a source of funds for the rebels. The two leaders were also expected to discuss recent developments in Southeast Asia, particularly the fighting between China and Vietnam. President Ne Win has stressed the importance of non-interference by the big powers in the affairs of the region.
