  • Description

THERE HAVE BEEN MORE BOMB INCIDENTS IN THE ISRAELI-OCCUPIED GAZA STRIP, FOLLOWING THREE MONTHS OF RELATIVE CALM. THE LATEST INCIDENTS UNDERLINE GAZA CITY'S STATUS AS A DANGEROUS AND TROUBLED CENTRE FOR ARAB REFUGEES, WITH A RESULTANT LOSS IN TOURISM AND COMMERCE.

THE WHOLE OF THE GAZA STRIP IS UNDER A GENERAL NIGHT CURFEW. ISRAELI TROOPS UNDERTAKE STRICT SECURITY MEASURES, INCLUDING THE CAREFUL SEARCH OF EVERY CAR AND TRUCK ENTERING OR LEAVING THE STRIP, BUT BOMBS AND GRENADES CONTINUE TO BE SMUGGLED INTO THE CITY.

MORE THAN 150 ARAB CIVILIANS HAVE BEEN SOUNDED IN BOMB INCIDENTS OVER THE PAST YEAR.

AFTER SPATE OF ALMOST DAILY GUERILLA ATTACKS LAST AUTUMN THE GAZA STRIP HAD THREE MONTHS OF RELATIVE TRANQUILLITY. BUT IN THE PAST 4 WEEKS INCIDENTS HAVE AGAIN BEEN ON THE INCREASE.

ON FRIDAY (FEBRUARY 27TH) A 12-YEAR-OLD BOY WAS KILLED AND 40 OTHER PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN TWO ARAB GUERILLA GRENADE ATTACKS IN GAZA'S MAIN STREET. MANY OF THE WOUNDED WERE WOMEN AND CHILDREN. THE GUERILLAS HURLED TWO GRENADES AT AN ISRAELI CIVILIAN VEHICLE, MISSING THEIR TARGET. HOWEVER, ONE OF THE GRENADES WENT OFF BEHIND THE VEHICLE, KILLING THE YOUNG BOY AND INJURING 37 BYSTANDERS. SHORTLY AFTERWARDS, A GUERILLA TOSSED ANOTHER GRENADE AT AN ISRAELI MILITARY VEHICLE. THREE SOLDIERS WERE SLIGHTLY INJURED.

ISRAELI TROOPS IMMEDIATELY RUSHED TO THE AREA. WHICH WAS ESPECIALLY CROWDED FOR THE MOSLEM SABBATH, AND BEGAN COMBING NEIGHBOURING STREETS AND BUILDINGS FOR SUSPECTS. SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE HELD FOR QUESTIONING.
