  • Description

An Indian Airlines Caravelle airliner crashed in flames at Bombay's Santa Cruz Airport early on Tuesday (12 October), killing all 95 people who were on board.

SYNOPSIS: The aircraft was in trouble soon after take-off when an engine caught fire and then the airliner began to disintegrate in the air as its captain fought to bring it back for a landing. It crashed just short of the main airport runway, and wreckage was spread over a wide area.

An airliner official said there were no survivors among the 89 passengers and six crew members. The plane had been on a domestic flight from Bombay to Madras which had been delayed for seven-and-a-half hours because of engine trouble in the Boeing aircraft originally scheduled to operate the flight. The passengers were subsequently transferred to the Caravelle. Bombay police said later that 58 bodies had been recovered from the grassy area where the plane crashed.

Officials praised the skill of the Captain who steered the crippled plane between hangars and petrol storage tanks in a vain effort to crash land. Most of the bodies were unrecognisable.
