  • Description

THE REBEL COUP IN THE NORTH BORNEO PROTECTORATE OF BRUNEI HAS BEEN FRUSTRATED, ORGANISED RESISTANCE HAS CEASED AND ORDER HAS BEEN LARGELY RE-ESTABLISHED. THAT WAS THE NEWS GIVEN TO BRITISH MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS TODAY (THURSDAY) BY MR. NIGEL FISHER UNDER SECRETARY AT THE COLONIAL OFFICE.

MR. FISHER'S STATEMENT ADDED THAT THERE WERE NOW SUFFICIENT SECURITY FORCES IN THE COUNTRY TO DEAL WITH REMAINING RESISTANCE. ALL MAJOR CENTRES IN BRUNEI AND THE AFFECTED AREAS OF NEIGHBOURING SARAWAK HAD BEEN CLEARED AND LIFE WAS RETURNING TO NORMAL IN THE TOWNS AND VILLAGES. AN ESTIMATED 50 TO 60 REBELS HAD BEEN KILLED AND SOME 600 TO 700 TAKEN PRISONERS. BRITISH SERVICE CASUALTIES WERE SEVEN KILLED AND 28 WOUNDED.

A TYPICAL MOPPING-UP OPERATION CARRIED OUT BY BRITISH FORCES AND LOYAL TRIBESMEN IN THE DENSE JUNGLE REGIONS OF THE NORTH SARAWAK AND BRUNEI BORDER WAS FILMED BY A VISNEWS CAMERAMAN AT THE END OF LAST WEEK. HE ACCOMPANIED MEN OF THE 1ST BATTALION, THE GREEN JACKETS WHO WERE FLOWN IN BY NAVAL HELICOPTERS TO LINK UP WITH TROOPS WHO HAD BEEN LANDED BY SEA TWO DAYS EARLIER. THEIR MISSION WAS TO CAPTURE THE LAST TWO REBEL STRONGHOLDS OF SIBUTI AND BEKENU IN NORTH SARAWAK.

LOCAL BOATS POWERED BY OUTBOARDS ENGINES WERE USED BY THE TROOPS WHO FOUND RIVER TRANSPORT THE BEST WAY TO PENETRATE THE JUNGLE. AS THE TROOPS AND LOYAL TRIBESMEN MOVED FROM VILLAGE TO THE VILLAGE THE NUMBER OF REBELS GIVING THEMSELVES UP INCREASED. HUNDREDS OF RIFLES, SHOTGUNS AND S. EARS WERE CAPTURED.

BEKENU, CLOSE TO THE IMPORTANT OIL TOWN OF MIRI, WAS CAPTURED BY A COMPANY OF GREEN JACKETS. THEY HAD MARCHED ALL NIGHT TO SURROUND THE STRONGHOLD IN A SURPRISE ATTACK. THEY KILLED SIX REBELS, WOUNDED THREE AND CAPTURED TEN. AMONG THOSE RELEASED BY THE TROOPS WAS THE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER, A MALAY. HE WAS TAKEN INTO THE JUNGLE ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE REVOLT WHERE THE REBELS TRIED TO MAKE HIM SWEAR LOYALTY TO THE REBEL CAUSE.
