    TREJOS HAD THE BACKING OF THREE FORMER PRESIDENTS AND THEIR RESPECTIVE POLITICAL PARTIES. FORMERLY HE TAUGHT MATHEMATICS AND ECONOMICS AT THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY.

    HE HAS SERVED NOTICE THAT COSTA RICA, FORMERLY ACTIVE IN AFFAIRS OF THE ORGANISATION OF AMERICAN STATES, SHOULD NOT "GET INVOLVED IN THE AFFAIRS OF OTHER LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES."
    TREJOS HAS PROMISED HE WILL REFORM THE NATIONALISED BANKING SYSTEM AND ALLOW FOREIGN BANKS TO SET UP BRANCHES IN COSTA RICA.

    THE NEW PRESIDENT IS MARRIED AND HAS FIVE CHILDREN. HE LIVES IN A MODEST HOME IN A MIDDLE-CLASS SECTION OF SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA'S CAPITAL.
