BY LAST NIGHT (THURSDAY), 62 PEOPLE --- 20 OF THEM POLICEMEN --- HAD BEEN INJURED IN CLASHES IN THE SOUTHERN FRENCH TOWN OF CARCASSONNE. EARLIER IN THE DAY, HOWEVER, THE DEMONSTRATIONS WERE ORDERLY.

    DURING THE CLASHES, DEMONSTRATORS HURLED STONES AT A POLICE CORDON, TRIED TO SET FIRE TO A POLICE CAR, SMASHED WINDOWS, BLOCKED RAILWAY TRACKS, AND LAPPED A CAR INTO A LOCAL CANAL.

    ABOUT 50,000 PEOPLE TOOK PART IN LINKED PROTESTS IN CARCASSONNE AND THE TOWNS OF MONTPELLIER IN THE SOUTH AND DRAGUIGNAN IN THE SOUTHEAST OF FRANCE.

    THE DEMONSTRATORS CLAIM THAT THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT FORCES THEM TO KEEP OFF THE MARKET THE EQUIVALENT QUANTITY OF WINE IMPORTED FROM NORTH AFRICA.
