    Background: The First Vietnamese Infantry Division of the South Vietnamese Army on Tuesday (15 July) mounted a week-long operation to destroy Vietcong installations in an area near the Ashau Valley in the Quang Dien district of South Vietnam's Thua Thien Province.

    The operation was called Lam Son 342, and contact was made with a unknown number of Vietcong belonging to the K-6 Communist base 20 miles (32 Kms) east of the Ashau Valley.

    Several Vietcong were capture in the first few days of the operation, as well as many rifles and other weapons.
