  • Description

Hundreds of Belgians who have left Congo-Kinshasa since 1960 marched through the streets of Brussels today (Saturday) in a demonstration against what they consider to be the Government's lenient attitude towards happenings in the Congo.

The marchers, who mainly came from the Kivu and Katanga province of the Cogo, claimed that the Belgian Government's policy towards the Congo had resulted in "disastrous consequences" for Belgians there.

There are still more than 50,000 Belgians living in the Congo, including 2,400 technical aid staff and their families. Recently, the Belgian Government announced it would continue technical aid to the Congo only if the safety of Belgians there could be assured.
