  • Description

FLEMISH-SPEAKING STUDENT GROUPS DEMONSTRATED TODAY (WEDNESDAY) OUTSIDE LOUVAIN UNIVERSITY IN BELGIUM -- THE LATEST OUTBREAK OF THE NATION'S "LANGUAGE WAR". ROOT OF THE TROUBLE LIES IN THE SO-CALLED LANGUAGE FRONTIER, WHICH SPLITS BELGIUM INTO THE FLEMISH-SPEAKING NORTH AND WEST (FLANDERS), AND THE FRENCH-SPEAKING SOUTH AND EAST (WALLONIA.)
TENSION AT THE UNIVERSITY MOUNTED WHEN LEADERS OF FLEMISH-SPEAKING STUDENTS CALLED TODAY'S DEMONSTRATION. FRENCH-SPEAKING STUDENT LEADERS DEMOUNCED THE DEMONSTRATION AS "PROVOCATIONS OF FLEMISH EXTREMISTS" AND ADVISED STUDENTS NOT TO STAY NEAR THE UNIVERSITY WHILE IT TOOK PLACE. THE ASKED MEMBERS TO ATTEND INSTEAD A CEREMONY NEAR LIEGE TO MARK THE CONSTRUCTION OF A UNIVERSITY CAMPUS FOR FRENCH-SPEAKING STUDENTS. LEADERS SAID THEY AGREED THAT LOUVAIN WAS A TOWN IN THE FLEMISH REGION, BUT CONSIDERED THE UNIVERSITY SHOULD CATER FOR BOTH FRENCH-SPEAKING AND FLEMISH-SPEAKING STUDENTS.

THE CHAIRMAN OF THE FLEMISH WING OF THE P.S.C. (SOCIAL CHRISTIAN PARTY), MR. VAN DE KERCKHOVE, BLAMED RUCTIONS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF FRENCH-SPEAKING STUDENTS. HE CLAIMED THAT SINCE 1932, THE FRENCH-SPEAKING STUDENT BODY HAD VOLUNTARILY CUT ITSELF OFF FROM THE FLEMISH LANGUAGE AND WAS NOW UNABLE EVEN TO UNDERSTAND SPOKEN FLEMISH. "FROM THE FLEMISH SIDE", SAID MR. VAN DE KERCKHOVE,"MOST PEOPLE AT LEAST UNDERSTAND FRENCH." HE SAID THAT IF THERE WAS TO BE AN UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE TWO GROUPS, THE FRENCH-SPEAKING SECTION SHOULD BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND FLEMISH WITHOUT TRANSLATION.

THE RALLY CRITICISING THE FRENCH-SPEAKING FACTION ATTRACTED HUNDREDS OF MEMBERS OF THE RIVAL BODY, WHO CARRIED PLACARDS AND SASHES IN A MASS DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE THE UNIVERSITY BUILDINGS.
