Background: The army of Upper Volta celebrated its eleventh anniversary on November 1 with a parade attended by the President, General Sangoule Lamizana. Ambassadors and top government officials were among the spectators at the ceremony, which was held in the Place du 3 Janvier (Place of the 3 January) in the capital, Ouagadougou. The square is named after the date of the 1966 revolution. The proceedings included the presentation of medals, made by M. Daouda Traore, the defence minister, and Colonel Baba Sy, the senior army officer. The President himself is Chief of the Army, and President of the Higher Council of Defence.
