  • Description

On Tuesday night, riot-torn Harlem had the first night of complete calm since the disturbances broke out nearly two weeks ago.

Earlier in the day, a number of left-wing groups staged a 55-minute rally in the city's West Side, just south of Harlem. The groups, united under the banner of the Harlem Solidarity Committee, claimed their rally was to protest against "police terror."
The speakers called for, amongst other things, the immediate impeachment of Mayor Wagner, removal of the Police Commissioner Murphy, and the end of all policing of Harlem.

The chief speaker was Milton Rosen, Chairman of the Progressive Labour Movement.
