  • Description

THE TAXICAB - FOR YEARS THE TORMENTOR OF PEDESTRIANS ON NEW YORK'S TRAFFIC-CLOGGED STREETS - HAS FINALLY MET ITS MATCH. BUT IT TOOK A STURDY HORSE AND AN UNERRING LANCE TO DO THE TRICK.

THE ENCOUNTER TOOK PLACE LAST WEEK IN MANHATTAN. THE MODERN-DAY KNIGHT WAS 21-YEAR-OLD EDDIE HESS - WHOSE TUNIC AND FALCON CREST SIGNIFIED THE PURPOSE OF HIS CRUSADE: TO ADVERTIZE A BROOKLYN HOTEL NAMED ST. GEORGE.

EDDIE, ASTRIDE A WHITE HORSE AND ARMED WITH A 12-FT. LANCE, WAS TROTTING ALONG A STREET WHEN FROM BEHIND APPEARED A "DRAGON" - A SPEEDING TAXICAB. THE CAB SCREECHED TO A SALT AND HONKED ITS ANNOYANCE. KNIGHT AND HORSE WHIRLED AROUND AND EDDIE'S LANCE PLUNGED INTO THE CAB'S RADIATOR.

THE TAXI-DRIVER WAS QUITE UNHAPPY WITH THE JOUST - REPAIRS TO HIS CAB COST 60 DOLLARS. "BUT WHAT COULD A GUY DO TO A HORSE," HE SHRUGGED.
