  • Description

HIGH WINDS AFFECTED THE POSITIONING OF A LIGHTHOUSE OFF THE IRISH COAST YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY). TUGS TOWED THE HUGE CYLINDRICAL BULK OUT TO A POINT 11 MILES (17 KMS) FROM THE PORT OF DUN LAOGHAIRE BUT HIGH WINDS PREVENTED THE FLOATING SECTION BEING PLACED ON THE UNDERWATER FOUNDATION.

THE 7,000 TON LIGHTHOUSE TOOK 15 HOURS TO COVER THE 11 MILES-TRIP. JUST SHORT OF THE POINT ON THE KISH SANDBANK WHERE A FOUNDATION HAS BEEN PREPARED A BROKEN MOORING CABLE UPSET THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE OPERATION. THE LIGHTHOUSE TILTED DRAMATICALLY FOR A SHORT TIME, BUT WAS LATER RIGHTED.

AT THE SANDBANK THE LIGHTHOUSE WAS PARTIALLY FLOODED, THUS SINKING ITS OUTER SHELL 60 FEET INTO THE WATER. AT THIS POINT THE WINDS AFFECTED THE PROJECT. LATER, WHEN IT HAS BEEN SETTLED FIRMLY ON THE BASE THE EXTENDING TOWER WILL BE RAISED 150 FEET.

THE LIGHTHOUSE, COSTING GBP350,000 AND TAKING 2 YEARS TO BUILD, WILL BE OPERATIONAL IN 2 MONTHS WHEN IT WILL REPLACE A LIGHTSHIP.
