  • Description

Ghanaian students demonstrated in Kumasi on July 17th after Ghana's National Redemption Council said it had uncovered a plot to restore to power the former Prime Minister, Dr. Kofi Busia. A session of the All African Students' Conference was interrupted to allow the students to demonstrate. Some of the demonstrators carried placards reading "Bring Busia for Skinning" and "Kill Them". According to an official statement, disgruntled businessmen and members of the disbanded Progress Party had plotted to overthrow the Council and bring Dr. Busia back from Britain, where he has been living since January. He was overthrown while in Britain for medical treatment. Dr. Busia, interviewed at his home near Oxford, denied any knowledge of a plot against the National Redemption Council.
