West Germany's Foreign Minister, Herr Walter Scheel, has become something of a pop star in his country. His first - and perhaps last - record has stormed the nation and is currently number three in the top ten. He has not forsaken his political career, let his hair down or anything like that. He is still firmly in command of West Germany's foreign affairs
The record was, in fact, made for charity. All the proceeds go to a number of West German charities, from cancer research to child welfare groups.
The record is of two German folk songs. The "A" side is entitled "High on your yellow wagon" and the song on the other is "Into God's beautiful world". Herr Scheel is accompanied by the Dusseldorf Male Voice Choir.
On Monday (21 January) a cheque for 100.000 DMs (approximately 16,000 pounds sterling) was handed over to Herr Scheel to be passed on to the charities. The cheque, presented at a ceremony in Bonn, represented the proceeds from the record as well as donations from the record company and Herr Scheel.
