    TWENTY-NINE PEOPLE ARE DEAD OR MISSING AFTER CYCLONE DANY HIT SOUTH MADAGASCAR LAST WEEK. OVER TWENTY THOUSAND ARE HOMELESS. MORE THAN 140 VILLAGES HAVE BEEN DAMAGED, AND TWENTY-SIX ROADS CUT BY THE FLOODS CAUSED BY THE TORRENTIAL RAIN WHICH FOLLOWED THE TORNADO.

    THE RIVER MANGOKY HAS BURST IT'S BANKS, FLOODING 1,500 HECTARES OF CROPS. TWO HUNDRED HECTARES OF COTTON HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY DESTROYED. THE BANKS HAVE BEEN BREACHED IN SEVENTEEN PLACES.

    PRESIDING AT A MEETING OF THE PERMANENT COMMITTEE SET UP TO OVERSEE MEASURES TO DEAL WITH THE CYCLONE DAMAGE, MALAGASY PRESIDENT PHILIBERT TSIRANA SAID THAT CONDITIONS WERE AS IF A WARRING INVADER HAD JUST LEFT THE COUNTRY. THE GOVERNMENT HAS OPENED A NATIONAL SUBSCRIPTION FOR THE DISASTER VICTIMS. PROVISION FOR THE HOMELESS ARE BEING PARACHUTED IN TO THE AREA BY FRENCH AND MALAGASY AIRCRAFT.
