  • Description

The dated history of Kano, one of Nigeria's 12 states with its capital of the same name, stretches back to 999 AD. The city was the ancient crossroads of the Sahara caravan routes.....its mystery nearly as deep as that of Timbuktoo. Its legendary history goes back to centuries before the Europeans first knew of its name.
In those days Kano and its province was an important trading centre. Spices, slaves and stock were sold in the market places.
Today Kano has a population of more than 320-thousand and is still a thriving community. New tall buildings rub shoulders with the old mud huts. A carved wooden door on the Emir's residence is said to be 500 years old while not far away a modern city council building stands as an example of the city's new progress.
The main industries revolve around the processing of raw materials such as hides, cotton and ground nuts. The stacks of groundnuts near the city awaiting processing are world famous. A more ancient industry is the dye pits where cloth is tinted the famous Kano blue by a process involving the liquifying of leaves and roots.
The regions main earnings come from groundnuts the annual production fetching well over 20 million sterling (46 million dollars).
