The ninth child born to Senator and Mrs Robert Kennedy was christened Matthew Maxwell Taylor Kennedy at a baptismal service in New York on Sunday (17 January). The newest member of the Kennedy family was surrounded by a dozen relatives at the baptism including Mrs. John F. Kennedy and her two children.
Senator Robert Kennedy, the oldest surviving Kennedy brother, carried young Matthew into St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City himself. The baby cried once as he was held over a marble baptismal font and a priest placed drops of water on his head.
Kathleen Kennedy, 13 years old, and Joseph Patrick Kennedy, 12, the Senator's two oldest children, served as Matthew's godparents. The Senator's wife Ethel was not present because she is recovering from the Caeserian section by which Matthew was delivered January 11.
Jacqueline Kennedy wore a black hat, black dress and a tailored mink coat. She watched the ceremony with Caroline and John Kennedy, Jr., her two children.
The baby was named Matthew because Senator and Mrs. Kennedy are fond of the name. He was given the two middle names of Maxwell Taylor because General Taylor, the U.S. Ambassador to South Vietnam and former Chief of Staff, is a long time friend of the Kennedy family.
