Background: Jordan celebrated its 25th anniversary of Independence on Tuesday (25 May) with a military parade through the streets of Amman. King Hussein attended the parade, which was the largest ever held in the history of the country. The show of military strength comes at a time when Jordan's government is reducing its troop strength in the capital. The army has been present in force in Amman since last month, conducting searches for heavy arms and ensuring the commandos had withdrawn.

King Hussein reviewed the parades. He was in good health in spits of radio reports that he had been assassinated.

The parade comes at a time when the government is running down its troops strength in the city. The army troops entered the capital in force last month, searching for heavy arms and making sure that the commandos had withdrawn. The troops will be withdrawn after the parade, the army command said, in accordance with the amnesty with the commandos.

The parade was a success for the army, but so too was their other mission - a spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior said last week that they had found what he called "big arms dumps" for the second day running.

King Hussein was accompanied at the parade by the Crown Prince, Prince Hassan, who left with him. Most of the country's political leaders and leading diplomats were also there.
