Background: FORTY-ONE POLICEMEN AND 34 CIVILIANS WERE IN HOSPITAL IN ATHENS YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) FOLLOWING STREET FIGHTING BETWEEN THE POLICE AND STRIKING BUILDING WORKERS. THE CLASHES FOLLOWED EARLIER, SEPARATE DEMONSTRATIONS BETWEEN RIVAL YOUTH GROUPS IN THE GREEK CAPITAL.

THE FIGHTING BROKE OUT WHEN 2,000 BUILDING WORKERS REFUSED TO DISPERSE AFTER A RALLY IN ONE OF THE CITY'S THEATRES. THE MEN WERE TAKING PART IN A 24-HOUR STOPPAGE BY ???50,000 WORKERS AS PART OF A CAMPAIGN TO GET MORE PAY AND BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS. THEY PELTED POLICE WITH STONES, BRICKS AND WOOD, AND SOME SHOUTED ANTI-GOVERNMENT AND ANTI-AMERICAN SLOGANS WHICH INCLUDED "GREECE OUT OF NATO". EIGHT MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE WHICH ORGANISED THE STRIKE WERE AMONG THOSE ARRESTED.

IN NORTHERN GREECE, ABOUT 500 BUILDING WORKERS AT SALONICA HELD A RALLY TO PRESS THEIR DEMANDS, BUT DISPERSED QUIETLY AFTER THE PUBLIC PROSECUTOR HAD THREATENED THEM WITH "SEVERE POLICE ACTION" IF THEY DEMONSTRATED.
