TRANSCRIPT: LINES: "There has been some criticism that the venue for the tournament is rather noisy with the pantomime going on upstairs. Does this affect the players?"

SEQ. 7: JAMES TARJAN: "Well I have never played in a chess tournament that had perfect conditions as far as noise goes, and it does not seem to matter how much money is spent, or where the tournament is, or now fancy a place. It is almost impossible to have perfect conditions, and I think that conditions have been quite satisfactory."

LINES: "You have not seemed worried by the noise of the pantomime above? It has been a bit noisy you think?"

SEQ. 8: SYULA SAX: "Oh yes."

LINES: "How do you fee about the criticism that has been levelled at the venue?"

SEQ. 9: RITSOM MORRY: "Well I think actually it is a bit like Mark Twain's death, it is greatly exaggerated. The fact of the matter is, of course, you can always find something wrong with any organisation that you may come in contact with. And you have to remember, of course, that all the people concerned in this are people who have given a lot of time to it,

Background: Chess..and in England the 53rd Hastings International Chess Congress is taking place in the south coast resort town of Hastings amid growing criticism of Hastings as the venue. The present British Champion Tony Miles recently refused to take part in the tournament; he contended the building it takes place in was damp and noisy. Visnews reporter Phil Lines asked some of the contestants their reaction to such criticism.

SYNOPSIS: Hastings is widely regarded as the mecca of International Chess; yet this year the White Rock pavilion -- a regular venue -- has been strongly criticised. The problem stems from the dual purpose of the pavilion, which also houses pantomimes and wrestling bouts. This year, a Christmas pantomime taking place in a room above the Chess players frayed their concentration. The sound of the performers and audience laughter disturbed them. Visnews reporter Phil Lines spoke to several contestants, including Syula sax of Hungary -- currently lying second in the competition -- and Ritsom Morry, Chief Controller of the tournament. He asked for their reactions to the criticisms of the conditions of play.

but they are not professional organisers and they have not unlimited funds at their disposal."
Despite the criticism, the tournament -- whose past winners include present World champion Anatoly Karpov -- gives many players a chance to establish a name for themselves in International Chess.
