The internationally known author, Mr. Truman Capote, staged a huge, glittering party Monday night (28 Nov) in New York. Famous people flew from Rome, Venice, Hollywood, Washington and many other cities to attend the affair. More than 500 persons -- all dressed in black and white attire and masks, some very expensive -- showed up at the party. Most of the people who came were famous actors, actresses, statesmen, artists, writers and internationally known social figures.
It was felt by many prominent persons that to be invited to the party was a "social must." Some of Mr. Capote's guests spent thousands of dollars for masks and gowns."
Among those celebrities who attended were: Roving Ambassador Averell Harriman and his wife, actress Joan Fontaine, actor Henry Fonda and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sinatra, Senator Jacob Javits and his wife, actress Claudette Colbert, Miss Lynda Johnson (eldest daughter of President Johnson), Under Secretary of State Nicholas DeB. Katzenbach, Baroness Guy de Rothchild, Henry Ford II and his wife, and many others. (Averell Harriman, Joan Fontaine, and Henry Fonda are shown in our film)
Never in recent history has a private party received so much publicity. Strict security measures were ordered at the Hotel Plaza, where the $20,000 ball was held, to keep non invited persons photographers, and reporters from mixing with the invited guests.
Some of the guests were from Garden City, Kansas, the setting of Mr. Capote's popular book "In Cold Blood." The book, concerning the mass murder of a farm family, is expected to bring Mr. Capote $2,000,000, including film rights.
Mr. Capote escorted Mrs. Philip Graham, the guests of honour. She is the president of the Washington Post (a noted newspaper) and Newsweek (a mass circulation weekly magazine).
