  • Description

Federal Nigerian forces have recaptured the key strategic town of Ore in Western Nigeria from Biafran troops who occupied it several weeks ago. The forces of the secessionist Biafran state are reported to be making their way the 80 miles to their stronghold in Benin, the capital of mid-west Nigeria.

The Federal forces claim to have driven most of the invading Biafran forces from the western region. To take the town they adopted guerrilla tactics, but victory came after the two armies had fought a decisive battle six miles outside the town.

As the Biafrans retreated they blew bridges behind them in a bid to slow the Nigerian advance. There were reports of widespread looting as the town was surrendered. During the fighting the town's 2,000 people took to the surrounding country for safety.
