  • Description

VETERAN CARS IN A TEST OF RELIABILITY AND ENDURANCE REACHED VIENNA SAFELY YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) -- AFTER A WEEK'S RUN OF 1,365 KILOMETRES (850 MILES) FROM PARIS.

SIXTY TWO CARS, ALL BUILT BEFORE 1917, TOOK PART, AND ONLY SIX FAILED TO FINISH. AMONG THE ENTRANTS WAS A RENAULT, WHICH WON THE FIRST PRIZE FOR THE RALLY 63 YEARS AGO. THE OLDEST ENTRANT WAS A FRENCH CAR, AN 1899 PANHARD.

THERE WERE EIGHT STOPS DURING THE RUN AND EACH CAR, DEPENDING ON AGE AND SIZE, TRAVELLED AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF BETWEEN 20 AND 45 KILOMETRES AN HOUR (12 AND 28 MILES). CARS FROM NINE COUNTRIES PARTICIPATED -- FRANCE, BELGIUM, ITALY, SWITZERLAND, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, BRITAIN, WEST GERMANY, HOLLAND AND SPAIN.

BIG CROWDS OF MOTOR FANS WELCOMED THE CARS INTO VIENNA. THEIR ARRIVAL PARALYSED WEEKEND TRAFFIC AS THEY DROVE TO THE CENTRE OF THE CITY WITH AN ESCORT OF AUSTRIAN VETERAN CARS.
