  • Description

CALM SEAS TODAY (SATURDAY) BROUGHT RELIEF TO FLOODED AREAS OF THE PO VALLEY, INUNDATED WHEN DYKES ALONG THE ADRIATIC SEA COLLAPSED.

VAST AREAS OF THE PO DELTA ARE UNDER SEVERAL FEET OF WATER, AND TEN THOUSAND PEOPLE HAVE LEFT THEIR HOMES.

SEVERAL DAYS OF GOOD WEATHER ARE NEEDED TO REPAIR THE GAPING HOLES IN THE DYKES. THE WALLS WERE BROKEN WHEN GALES WHIPPED UP HEAVY SEAS, BATTERING THE RETAINING WALLS.

IN THE VILLAGE OF SCARDOVARI WATER IS UP TO ROOF LEVEL, AND DAMAGE THROUGHOUT THE DELTA RUNS INTO MILLIONS OF POUNDS STERLING.

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT IT WILL TAKE THREE MONTHS FOR THE FLOODWATERS TO RECEDE, AND AT LEAST ANOTHER THREE YEARS BEFORE MUCH OF THE FARMLAND IS AGAIN USABLE.

MANY OF THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN FORCED TO EVACUATE THEIR HOMES WILL PROBABLY NOT TO RETURN TO THEM.
