Ugandan President Idi Amin and United States Congressman Charles Diggs Jnr. both held news conferences?
Ugandan President Idi Amin and United States Congressman Charles Diggs Jnr. both held news conferences in Addis Ababa on Sunday (11 January).
Both men are in Ethiopia for the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) summit meeting on the Angolan crisis. President Amin is the current OAU Chairman, and Mr. Diggs is the only American representative at the summit.
The two news conferences varied greatly in style and content. President Amin held his poolside, during his morning dip. The colourful Ugandan leader swopped questions and answers with newsmen as he paused from racing a Swedish journalist up and down his hotel pool.
President Amin is trying to steer the summit into an acceptable solution to Angola's problems. One thing he did make clear again was his desire to have all foreign elements out of the war-torn country.
Despite the impromptu conference, Mr. Amin still managed to win his swimming races...and he summed it all up with the quote, "That's why I am swimming champion...and that's why I am Chairman."
Congressman Diggs found the going a little harder when he met newsmen in the more restrictive atmosphere of the Hilton Hotel conference room.
He had to defend the U.S. involvement in Angola, and remained newsmen that America's legislative bodies...not it's "executives"...would determine the country's policies.
Congressman Diggs described American intrusion into Angola as the biggest blunder in the history of his country's relations with Africa.
