A NEW VOLCANO HAS RISEN FROM THE SEA OFF THE COAST OF ICELAND. IT IS?

  • Description

A NEW VOLCANO HAS RISEN FROM THE SEA OFF THE COAST OF ICELAND. IT IS ABOUT A QUARTER-OF-A-MILE EAST OF SURTSEY, THE VOLCANIC ISLAND WHICH WAS THRUST UP IN THE UNDERSEA ERUPTION IN 1963. SCIENTISTS REGARD THE NEW VOLCANO GEOLOGICALLY AS PART OF THE SURTSEY VOLCANO.

THE NEW VOLCANO IS SENDING A 3,000 FT (900 METRES) PILLAR OF SMOKE AND ASH INTO THE AIR. THE STREAM OF LAVA FROM SURTSEY STOPPED ABOUT A FORTNIGHT AGO - AND A FEW DAYS LATER AN UNUSUAL SWELL HERALDED THE NEW ERUPTION.

ONE MAN WHO IS WATCHING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEW VOLCANO WITH CONSIDERABLE INTEREST IS MR. OLAFUR VESTMANN - AN ICELANDIC FISHERMAN WHO WAS THE FIRST MAN TO SEE THE BEGINNING OF THE SURTSEY ERUPTION IN 1963.

SCIENTISTS VIEW THE NEW VOLCANO WITH CLOSE INTEREST. THEY DO NOT YET KNOW WHETHER IT WILL BECOME A PERMANENT ISLAND - BUT IF IT DOES, THEY SHALL WATCH IT CLOSELY TO FIND JUST HOW QUICKLY LIFE WILL APPEAR THERE. THIS WOULD HELP THEM IN THEIR STUDY INTO THE EVOLUTION OF LIFE ON EARTH.

FOR THE ORDINARY PEOPLE OF ICELAND, THE NEW VOLCANO HAS PROVIDED A NEW ATTRACTION TO OCCUPY THE WHITSUN WEEKEND. IN THE PAST THREE DAYS MANY OF THEM HAVE FLOWN OVER IT IN AEROPLANE, WHILE SMALL BOATS CROWDED WITH SIGHTSEERS HAVE VENTURED AS CLOSE TO THE ERUPTION AS THEY CAN IN SAFETY.
