  • Description

Belgium and Congo-Kinshasa have signed a treaty of friendship after ten years of disagreement.

King Baudouin of Belgium and Cong-Kinshasa's President Mobutu exchanged signed copies of the treaty during celebrations to mark Congo-Kinshasa's tenth independence anniversary.

King Boudouin and Queen Fabiola are on a two-week visit to the Congo, their first since 1960 when the 39-year-old Monarch handed over independence.

Speaking after the signing of the treaty, King Baudouin remarked that the Congo had fought against the difficulty of all young nations, taking its future in its own hands.

He said the turning point in relations between the two countries came only two years ago. Prior to that time relations froze during the years of United Nations Military assistance. The feuding between the two countries came after independence when Belgian troops intervened and shot two officers and four white civilians in Elisabethville (now Lubumbashi).

With friendly relations now sealed between Belgium and Congo-Kinshasa by the signing of the treaty, King Baudouin has invited President Mobutu to make a private and official visit to Brussels.
