  • Description

Great concern has been expressed in Danish newspapers over the death of former United Nations official Povl Bang-Jensen - found shot in a heavily wooded park Nov. 26, just outside New York, USA.

"Information", Copenhagen's independent afternoon newspaper, states; "If Bang-Jensen is dead, this is murder in whichever way it may have happened. It has an indisoluble connection with strife over the Hungarian committee of the United Nations." It also describes pressure on Bang-Jensen as "too hard and too long".

Beng-Jensen - 50 year old father of five children - was formerly a senior political officer with the United Nations. He was dismissed in 1957 while serving as Assistant Secretary to the United Nations special committee on Hungary, for refusing to hand over the secretariat the names of 80 Hungarian witnesses whom he had interviewed in an inquiry into the 1956 uprising and its suppression. He feared the list would fall into Communist hands.

American federal agents and police have been engaged in a nation wide search for the Danish diplomat since his disappearance on his way home to Long Island Nov. 23. His body was found in Alley Pond Park, a mile from his home. In his hand a pistol. In his pocket a suicide note.
