  • Description

THE BITTER CIVIL WAR WHICH BROKE OUT IN ATHENS 25 YEARS AGO TODAY, WAS RECALLED AT A PARADE IN THE GREEK CAPITAL. GREECE'S REGENT, LIEUTENANT-GENERAL GEORGE ZOITAKIS, OFFICIATED AT THE CEREMONY, WHICH WAS ATTENDED BY MEMBERS OF THE GREEK MILITARY REGIME CABINET AND MEMBERS OF THE HIERARCHY OF THE CHURCH IN GREECE.

TODAY'S CEREMONIES MARK THE DEFEAT OF COMMUNIST GUERILLAS IN THE CIVIL WAR WHICH BROKE OUT ON DECEMBER 3, 1944, WHEN VIRTUALLY THE WHOLE OF THE COUNTRY HAD BEEN OVER-RUN BY THE WAR-TIME COMMUNIST GUERILLA ORGANISATION EAM-ELAS, AND EFFORTS WERE MADE BY THEM TO TAKE ATHENS.

AMONG THE CROWDS WATCHING THE CEREMONIES WERE A NUMBER OF RELATIVES OF THOSE WHO DIED IN THE FIGHTING.
