Peter THOMPSON of VICTORIA today won his third AUSTRALIAN Open Golf Championship. In an eighteen hole play-off at ABELAIDE's KOOYONGA Course, THOMPSON finished six strokes ahead of David GRAHAM of NEW SOUTH WALES. This was THOMPSON's tee shot at the final hole. Both players had tied on two hundred and eighty-one for the four rounds of the championship proper. GRAHAM hit a well placed drive on the eighteenth.
It was a bad day for GRAHAM who never recovered after driving out of bounds on the first hole. He took a double bogey seven.
GRAHAM had a long putt for a birdie on the final hole, but the ball rolled past the cup.
All eyes were on THOMPSON as he putted for a course record of sixty-seven, but he had to be content with a sixty-eight. GRAHAM finished with seventy-four.
THOMPSON, aged forty-three, told the crowd of four thousand, that he may have struck a blow for the over forties by winning the Oven. he collected first prize-money of three thousand six hundred dollars.
