Background: A jostling crowd of some 10,000 filled the Lagos week-end resort of Bar Beach on Saturday (April 24) --to witness the public execution of three men accused of robbery.

Armed troops and mounted police controlled the crowd--while small traders did a brisk business on the sun-drenched beach, selling ice-creams and soft drinks to the spectators as they waited for the execution.

The three men were Driver-mechanic Folorunsho Babatunde, Trader Joseph Ilobo, and Naval Lieutenant William Oyazimo--the latter protesting his innocence to the end. The three had been condemned to death a week earlier for stealing, at different times last year, goods and a car worth about, 2,500 sterling, (6,000 dollars). They were tried by the Lagos State Armed Robbery Tribunal--created to curb the wave of armed robbery which broke out throughout the country after the Civil War.
