  • Description

A 47-year-old Frenchman has constructed the first plane ever made in Togo. Mr. Jean Camerini, a mechanic at a garage in Lome, has built a single-seater aircraft equipped with a Volkswagen car engine. Made out of wood, steel, aluminium and cloth, the plane took about a year and a half to built.

In Lome earlier this week, the aircraft had a successful test flight, piloted by Mr. Berdelman a German working for the Togolese Railway. After the flight, he conferred with Mr. Camerini.

The aircraft, XP-01, has a top speed of 170 kilometres (105 miles) an hour and can fly to an altitude of 4,000 metres (13,000 Feet) for periods of up to five hours.

SYNOPSIS: This is the first aircraft ever made in Togo. The single-seater, here piloted by Mr. Berdelman, underwent a successful test flight in Lome earlier this week. The plane was built by Mr. Jean Camerini, a Frenchman who runs a garage in Lome.

Over a year and a half, Mr. Camerini estimates that he put in fifteen-hundred hours in the construction of the aircraft, XP-OI.

As the aircraft took to the air, Mr. Camerini - on the left - looked an anxiously.

The success of this aircraft has encouraged the builder to begin construction on more and perhaps larger aircraft. Importing all the materials from Europe, Mr. Camerini used wood, steel, aluminum and cloth for the fuselage and working parts. The engine is a modified Volkswagen automobile engine. The aircraft has a top speed of one-hundred and seventy kilometres an hour. It can fly to an altitude of four-thousand metres for periods of up to five hours.

Mr. Berdelman, a German, and Mr. Camerini, a Frenchman, both first gained flying experience during the second world war. Mr. Berdelman now works for the Togolese Railway in Lome, but enjoys the chance to put his aeronautical skill to use.

Although he built the aircraft in his spare time, Mr. Camerini hopes to be able to devote his full time to building other aircraft. Both he and his pilot agreed that this plane performed up to their expectations.
