The Soviet Communist Party leader, Mr. Leonid Brezhnev, left Moscow on Saturday (15 March) at the head of a delegation to attend the Eleventh Congress of the Hungarian Communist Party.
The Congress starts on Monday (17 March).
It is Mr. Brezhnev's first foreign trip since he returned to the Kremlin last month after a two-month illness.
The Hungarian Communist Party Congress is due to last a week, but Mr. Brezhnev is not expected to stay that long in Budapest.
It is believed he will return to Moscow to meet the French Prime Minister, M. Jacques Chirac, who arrives there on Wednesday for a visit of five days.
Mr. Brezhnev regularly attends the party congresses of most East-Bloc countries and a failure to go to Hungary would have been interpreted as a sign that he was seriously ill.
