  • Description

President Nixon told a group of Naval cadets Friday (12 March) that "new isolationists" in the United States "have refused to learn the hard lessons in the history of tyranny."
"Our purpose is peace," he said, "peace with freedom, so that peace may be worth having; peace with justice, so that peace may be worth keeping; peace with strength, so that peace may be preserved."
Mr. Nixon spoke at graduation ceremonies for cadets at the Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport Rhode Island. Among the graduates was David Eisenhower, Mr. Nixon's son-in-law.

Speaking of the so-called new isolationists, Mr. Nixon said: "They would tell us -- as predecessors in other times have told us -- that the appetite for aggression can be satisfied if only we are patient and the ambitions of the aggressor are justified....I am never surprised to see these positions held, but I am always astonished to hear them held in the name of morality."
