Background: A senior United States Senator, Mr. Michael Mansfield,held a brief meeting with King Hassan in Rabat on Friday (Sept. 10) during a stop-over in Morocco. Mr. Mansfield, who had been to Europe to attend the International Parliamentary conference in Paris, continued to his return journey to Washington following the meeting. Also present at his talks with the King was American Ambassador to Morocco Mr. Stuart Rockwell.
SYNOPSIS: Morocco, Friday....and a meeting in the Royal Palace in Rabat between King Hassan and a senior United States Senator, Mr. Michael Mansfield, who was accompanied by the American Ambassador to Morocco Mr. Stuart Rockwell. Senator Mansfield has stopped off in Morocco on his way back to Washington from Europe, where he attended the eight-day International Parliamentary conference in Paris. King Hassan greeted the two Americans, who were accompanied by several aides, on their arrival at the Palace.
The subject of the talks between king Hassan and the American party was not disclosed, but the meeting was believed to be informal.
Following the meeting Senator Mansfield and his aides left for Washington by air in a Unite States Air Force jet. He was due to report back to President Nixon at the White House to brief him on his European tour and the stop-over in Morocco. PAUSE TWO SECONDS. senator Mansfield's recent proposal in the American Senate to half the number of U.S. troops in Europe by the end of the year was defeated by a heavy majority.
