  • Description

FOR HUNDREDS OF VIETNAMESE ROMAN CATHOLICS NOW LIVING IN CAMBODIA, A FLOATING VILLAGE IS THEIR HOME. THIS UNIQUE COMMUNITY FLOATS ON THE TONLE SAP RIVER, ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE CAMBODIAN CAPITAL, PHNOM PENH.

UNTIL A FEW YEARS AGO, THE VILLAGERS LIVED LIKE ANYONE ELSE - ON SOLID GROUND. BUT THEIR HOUSES HAD TO BE PULLED DOWN TO MAKE WAY FOR A GOVERNMENT ROAD. THE FOUR ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCHES WERE SAVED. AND THE VILLAGERS MOVED OUT ON TO THE RIVER.

THEY APPARENTLY HAVE NO INTENTION OF RETURNING TO THEIR COUNTRY OF ORIGIN. THEY FISH FOR THEIR LIVELIHOOD - AND KEEP THEIR RAFT HOME NEAT WITH POTTED PLANTS. LAUNDRY IS NO PROBLEM - THE RIVER'S WATERS ARE CLEAN ENOUGH FOR WASHING.

WHEN THE ANNUAL FLOODS COME, THE HOUSES, WHICH ARE TIED TOGETHER, ACTUALLY MOVE UP - AND DOWNSTREAM. REACHING SHORE PRESENTS NO PROBLEMS - THANKS TO A MODERN BRIDGE BUILT BY THE JAPANESE.
