  • Description

Rising crime rates in the United States have prompted at least one kansas City department store to take on a novel kind of security guard.

The store has purchased a tarantula spider to guard its jewellery display case.

The spider has been nicknamed "Diamond Lil", and has attracted so much attention that one pet store in the city has reported a sudden increase in tarantula sales, mainly as offbeat pets.

The tarantula -- full name "Lycosa Tarantula" -- is a large spider with a body between one to two inches in length (2.54.5.1 centimetres). Its bite was once thought to be poisonous, but modern research has proved that its greatest danger lies in its ability to inflict painful wounds.

Poisonous or not, "Diamond Lil" seems to be fulfilling her security duties in her jewel-case home with great success.
