  • Description

VISNEWS filmed the arrival at Haifa, Israel, Jan 24, of the Greek owned freighter 'Eolion'. Aboard the specially chartered ship were Jewish immigrant families from Rumania. In buses they were driven to their new homes, a development area in Galilee, they quickly ' make themselves at home'.

Rumanian jews are leaving their homeland in thousands following a puzzling reversal of policy by its Communist rulers. For years Jewish immigration from Rumania was virtually banned, but in January alone 7,000 quit the country. At the time of the Soviet take-over 15 years ago, at least half of the Rumanian Communist party consisted of jews. By eliminating the jews from the scene the party bosses are striving now to kill this association in the popular mind. With 250,000 to 300,000 people, Rumania has the largest jewish community in Eastern Europe outside the Soviet Union.

Israeli housing and employment expenditure figures in the 1959/60 budget, were based on the immigration of 40,000 migrants. 10,000 housing units were allocated for them, now that the estimate has be en doubled... probably trebled...the situation becomes acute.2,000 semi-permanent asbestos houses will be erected, but some migrants will have to live in temporary wooden or tin huts. About 90,000 [QUERY] immigrants still live in primitive temporary transit settlements.

The Israeli's are delighted that Communist countries are now letting jews out, but the old Israeli joke that all Russia has to do to knock Israel flat is to let her jews out is no longer considered funny in Israel.
