Background: Britain's Phil Read exploited the bad luck of Italy's Giacomo Agostini on Sunday (9 July) to win the 350 c.c. event of the East Gorman Motorcycling Grand Prix at the Sachenring Track in Hohenstein-Erasttrhal.

Agostini, eleven times a world champion and holding an unassailable lead in this year's 500 c.c. world championship, was in the lead of the 96 1/2 mile(155 km), eighteen-lap race. But, with only two laps to go, his MV Agusta developed engine-trouble. As the retired to the pits, Britain's Phil Read swept past to take the race at an average speed of 95 n.p.h.(152.8 km), a track record. Renzo Pasolini of Italy was second, and Dieter Braun of West Germany third.

Despite his premature retirement from the race, Agostini still retains the lead in the 350 c.c. world Championship points table, with 80 points. Jarnc Saarinen of Finland and Italy's Renzo Pasolini come after him with 60 points each.

The 250 c.c. event on the same day was won by Saarinen with Pasolini in second place. In the World Championship (250 c.c.) Table, Saarinen has a two-point lead over Britain's Rodney Gould.

SYNOPSIS: A host of international riders competed in the East German Grand Prix at the Sachenring Track on Sunday. World Champion Giacomo Agostini of Italy once again led the field in the three-hundred and fifth c.c. event.

But then Jarno Saarinen of Finland took his Yamaha to the front....
Agostini had been forced to retire with engine trouble with only two laps to go.....

Meanwhile Britain's Phil Read swept through into the lead at the final straight....
Despite Read's win, his old rival Agostini still led in the World Championship Table by a clear twenty points.

Next was the two-fifty c.c. event....
The race featured an exciting duel between Saarinen of Finland and Italy's Renzo Pasolini.....

But it was finally Saarinen who was first across the line....
Pasolini took second place and Rod Gould of Britain third. Saarinen still retains his World Championship lead by a slim two points.
