  • Description

It is just like any other restaurant in Tokyo ... menus are set and lunch, for example, consists of chicken soup and Vienna hamburger, washed down with fresh milk, and -- if you like -- an imported British bone.

The difference is that this restaurant cater for dogs and restaurant-owner Mr. Ryouzyu Yamazaki spares no effort to please his 500 or so privileged four-legged customers.

Meals, served on dainty trays complete with cutlery, range from 20 pence (about 46 cents) for breakfast to 60 pence (US $1.38) for dinner. There are calorie-controlled diets for overweight dogs and others for underweight dogs. There is also a special for birthday dogs.

Mr. Yamazaki also runs an adjoining dog beauty parlour for grooming and massage by pretty assistants.

He says he is not a fanatical animal lover. He has a mission -- to prove that Japanese are not unkind to their pets and to erase the smear, he claimed, made by the British press in the late 1960's accusing Japanese of being cruel to dogs.
