  • Description

All 71 passengers and crew members on board a hi-jacked Air Vietnam airliner were killed in a mid-air explosion on Sunday (15 September) as it approached Phan Rang airfield, 160 miles (260 kms) northeast of Saigon.

The bodies of the victims were scattered over a wide area of rice paddies. But, by Monday (16 September), most of them had been recovered. A government spokesman said that relatives were being flown to Phan Rang to identify them.

The Air Vietnam Boeing 727 jet was seized by a hi-jacker on a regular flight form Danang on the central coast to the capital, Saigon.

The hi-jacker was identified as Le Duc Tan. Although a Saigon military spokesman said the Paratroops Command had no record of him, he was said by reliable sources to have been wearing the uniform of a Major in the Government's elite airborne force.

Le Due Tan apparently detonated two hand grenades when the jetliner attempted to land at Phan Rang to refuel.

There was speculation that the hi-jacker was trying to commander the airliner to fly to North Vietnam. But this has not been confirmed.
