  • Description

Students at the University of Nairobi returned to lectures on Wednesday (January 20) after a two-day boycott in protest against the suspension of four women students earlier this term. A large number of students also staged a demonstration on the previous day in the university grounds. Police with shields and batons stood by.

Students and university authorities agreed late on Tuesday (January 19) that lectures should resume immediately following a promise from the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. S. Karanja, that he would review the suspensions. The women students were suspended following an incident involving a warden about the allocation of rooms.

Before the boycott was called off police wielding shields and batons moved onto the campus to disperse a gathering of students. Police said the students, moved at the request of Dr. Karanja, were being a nuisance.

The University of Nairobi, inaugurated by President Jomo Kenyatta last month, was said by the Nairobi newspaper "The Daily Nation" to be "off to a most deplorable start if events of the past few days were to be taken as a foreshadow of future relations between students and university authorities".
