  • Description

Some two hundred Canadian Red Indians clashed with police during a violent civil rights demonstration outside Canada's Parliament building in Ottawa yesterday (October 1).

The demonstration was in support of a campaign for better social conditions. The Indians are demanding a multi-million-dollars housing programme, better education facilities and increased medical care. They also want Canada's Minister for Indian Affairs, Mr. J. Judd Buchanan, removed from office.

The demonstration broke up in a street battle when police moved in. Several police were injured in scuffles and a spokesman for the Indians claimed that three carloads of his people were taken to hospital for treatment, although no-one was reported seriously injured.
