    THE EXECUTION OF 13 MEN IN KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, WAS POSTPONED TODAY (FRIDAY) AFTER AN APPEAL TO THE PARDON'S BOARD BY THE PRIME MINISTER, TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN. THE MEN - 11 CHINESE AND THREE MALAYS - WERE DUE TO BE HANGED IN PUDU JAIL EARLY TODAY FOR GUERRILLA ACTIVITIES DURING THE INDONESIAN CONFRONTATION WITH MALAYSIA IN 1964.

    THE RELATIVES OF THE MEN HAVE BEEN KEEPING VIGIL OUTSIDE THE PRISON ALL THIS WEEK. ARMY RIOT POLICE YESTERDAY AND EARLY TODAY CHARGED CROWDS OF RELATIVES OUTSIDE THE JAIL TO DISPERSE THEM WHEN THEY REFUSED TO GO. WEEPING RELATIVES MADE THEIR FINAL VISIT TO THE CONDEMNED MEN ON WEDNESDAY. THEY INCLUDED THE WIFE OF ONE OF THE MEN WHO TOOK WITH HER THE BABY DAUGHTER BORN WHILE HER FATHER WAS IN PRISON.

    THE JOHORE STATE PARDONS BOARD ANNOUNCED LATER TODAY IT HAD POSTPONED THE EXECUTIONS. THE BOARD, CALLED INTO SESSION BY THE SULTAN OF JOHORE, MADE ITS ANNOUNCEMENT AFTER THE SULTAN - WHO HAS THE PREROGATIVE OF MERCY - RECEIVED THE TUNKU'S SPECIAL APPEAL. THERE HAVE BEEN DEMONSTRATIONS THROUGHOUT MALAYSIA AGAINST THE EXECUTIONS, AND THE POLICE HAVE BEEN KEEPING AS SPECIAL GUARD ON THE PUDU JAIL.

    LAWYERS AND LEADERS OF OPPOSITION PARTIES HAD PREVIOUSLY MADE REPEATED APPEALS FOR CEMENCY FOR THE MEN. HOWEVER, THE GOVERNMENT HAD MAINTAINED THAT EVERYTHING CONSTITUTIONALLY AND LEGALLY POSSIBLE HAD BEEN DONE TO SAVE THE MEN.
